Wonders of Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the West cost
Day 1. Snæfellsnes peninsula
We leave Reykjavík and drive first north along the coast to visit the seal colony at Ytri Tunga and then on to Arnarstapi in the Snæfellsjökull National Park for a one-hour hike along the cliffs to the extraordinary rock formations at Hellnar.
Here you have the opportunity to experience Icelandic horses or try snowmobiling. These activities are not included in the tour price.
In spring the Arctic tern arrives to join the puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and cormorants which also nest here in large colonies.
Then on to the old fishing community of Dritvík, the golden sands of Skarðsvík bay and the red basalt crater of Saxhóll.
If weather conditions are right we will drive up to the Snæfellsjökull glacier.
Arrival at your hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2. Snæfellsnes - Langjökull glacier - Reykjavík
We begin our second day by driving to Stykkishólmur, often called the capital of Snæfellsnes.
Here we embark on an included three hour boat cruise among the 2700 islands whose spectacular rock formations make this a paradise for birdlife and candy for the eye.
After lunch the tour continues to Borgarfjörður where we will explore Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful geothermal spring.
Next we visit Reykholt, once the home of Iceland’s great saga writer, Snorri Sturluson.
This section of the journey brings us to two waterfalls, the enchanting lava waterfalls of Hraunfossar and impressive Barnafoss, the ‘Children’s Waterfall’, where you will learn its tragic legend.
Taking the dramatic highland road through the bleak and haunted Kaldidalur we have an opportunity to explore Langjökull, the country’s second largest glacier, before returning to Reykjavík via Hvalfjörður, Whale fjord, in time for dinner.
Depending on the season and weather conditions there is every chance you will see either the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights.
